“The Front Page” On Broadway

Nathan Lane, John Slattery and John Goodman Star in Revival of The Front Page

Stop the presses!
You won’t want to miss this star-studded Broadway revival of “The Front Page.” Produced by award-winning Broadway producer Scott Rudin, whose current running Broadway shows include “A View From the Bridge,” “The Crucible,” “The Humans,” “Blackbird” and the musical “Shuffle Along,” The Front Page opens in New York City this fall at the Broadhurst Theater.

Originally written by former Chicago news reporters turned playwrights Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur, “The Front Page” was first produced in 1928 and became a smash hit. Since then, the play has been restaged for Broadway three times, and has been adapted to film, TV and radio numerous times.

The Plot

News reporters from all of Chicago’s newsp” The Front Pageapers are passing the time in the dingy press room of the Criminal Courts Building, readying themselves to report on the biggest story of the day. The press room overlooks the gallows behind the Cook County Jail, where they will witness the hanging of Earl Williams, a white man alleged to be a Communist revolutionary who has been convicted of killing a black policeman. Just as Hildy Johnson, a cocky star reporter for the Examiner, arrives to announce to his colleagues that he’s leaving for a better paying job in New York and marrying Peggy Grant, word reaches the press room that Williams has escaped from the jail. After all but Hildy file out to obtain more information, Williams comes in through the window. When Williams tells Hildy he is not the revolutionary he is accused of being and that he shot the police officer by accident, the reporter realizes Williams was used as a political pawn to help the crooked mayor and sheriff appeal to black voters and win the election. Hildy hides Williams inside a roll-top desk, hoping to save the man and expose rampant corruption in the system.
