As one of the old timers in the National Hockey League (NHL), the Caroline Hurricanes continue to draw large crowds of cheering fans to their games. Based in Raleigh, North Carolina, they play all their home games at the PNC Arena in Raleigh. The team was formed in 1971 and was known as the New England Whalers. On joining the NHL in 1979, the team was renamed as the Hartford Whalers. The name Carolina Hurricanes was coined in 1997 just after relocation to North Carolina.

This experienced team has not seen much success but recent changes could clinch them a victory this season. Coach Paul Maurice was replaced by Kirk Muller and in February 2012, the contracts of Tim Gleason and Tuomo Ruutu were extended by four years. In quick succession, they signed on Jiri Tlusty to a two-year multimillion dollar deal.

The 2005-06 season was the most successful one for the 'The Canes' and they are hoping to recreate that former magic this season. Jeff Skinner is one of their star players and his contract with them was recently renewed by six years fetching him close to $34.4 million. He has won the Calder Trophy by edging past Logan Couture. This 20 year old is the youngest player ever in the NHL All Star game. Fans are keenly waiting for a star performance from him this season.

One of the top scorers for the franchise and captain Eric Staal will be closely watched this season. He is famous for scoring hat tricks and has numerous accomplishments to his name. His younger brother and teammate Jordan Staal is another player fans are counting on. Fans also have high expectations from previous captain Rod Brind'Amour, their assistant and developmental coach, this season.
