A long-standing tradition of football greatness seems to follow the Pittsburgh Panthers, affectionately referred to as the "Pitt." The Panthers have brought home the national title nine times, also making them one of the top 20 college football programs in all-time wins. Pitt football tickets have netted fans eight undefeated seasons since the school first launched its football program, with consecutive undefeated seasons from 1915 to 1917.

There were no red shirts during Pitt's first unofficial season, with a total of three players joining the first team, including the team's founders -- Bert Smyers and John Scott. They lost their first informal game against Shady Side Academy, with Smyers playing quarterback and Scott at center. Their first football was purchased with donations, and each player was responsible for piecing together his own uniform. The team would find their most success once they fielded a full team and hired Hall of fame coach "Pop" Warner. The Pittsburgh Panthers are a notable team in the NCAA, as they are the first football team to use numbers on uniforms, starting in 1908, as well as being the subject of the first live radio broadcast of a football game.

The Pitt share their stadium, Heinz Field, with the professional team of the same city, the Pittsburgh Steelers.
