Seeing Many Different Shows

The Argument for Seeing Many Different Shows

When it comes to the theatre, you have two basic choices: You can either see the shows that you love over and over again, or you can go see something new every time. Of course, personal preference plays into this, and people should certainly do whatever makes them happy; we are talking about entertainment, after all. However, some experts believe that it’s best to see something new each time, going to many different shows.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Of course, variety itself is nice. You’re more engaged with a show when you’ve never seen it before and you don’t know what to expect. You know how you can have reruns of a sitcom running in the background on TV, and you never really watch them? You don’t want the same feeling to take over the theatre. You want to be actively involved in the process so that you get more out of it, and that can happen when you’re seeing something new.

The Theatre Disappears

One of the unique things about the theatre is that a singular performance may be the only one that is exactly like that in history. You can go back and watch a movie, watch a TV show, or read a book, and it’s the same every time. Exactly the same. With the theatre, you get a one-night experience. This makes it special in a way that other types of entertainment can’t have. Some feel that it’s best to let the actors show up, put on the performance, and then figuratively — or literally — “step out into the night” and be gone for good. It makes that performance special to you because you were there, and you can’t get that back.

Don’t Be Let Down

Now, of course, you can go back to the same show later, but you run the risk of being let down. If you see a brilliant performance of Wicked or Les Misérables or The Music Man, where the cast is acting at an incredibly high level and giving an inspired performance, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment if you go back again and get anything less. You may feel like the performance is bland and not engaging, even if it’s very good, just because the bar was set so high. You’re perhaps better off to see something new, something that you can see with an open mind.

Buying Your Tickets

Again, you should certainly go to any shows that you want, and if that means seeing the same one dozens of times, so be it. But it is worth considering the incredible variety of shows, both on Broadway and in Las Vegas.
