One of the unique things about the theatre is that a singular performance may be the only one that is exactly like that in history. You can go back and watch a movie, watch a TV show, or read a book, and it’s the same every time. Exactly the same. With the theatre, you get a one-night experience. This makes it special in a way that other types of entertainment can’t have. Some feel that it’s best to let the actors show up, put on the performance, and then figuratively — or literally — “step out into the night” and be gone for good. Don’t Be Let Down
Now, of course, you can go back to the same show later, but you run the risk of being let down. If you see a brilliant performance of Wicked or Les Misérables or The Music Man, where the cast is acting at an incredibly high level and giving an inspired performance, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment if you go back again and get anything less. You may feel like the performance is bland and not engaging, even if it’s very good, just because the bar was set so high. You’re perhaps better off to see something new, something that you can see with an open mind.
